Finding the Heart: Principles for Tai Chi & Life

By Uli & Alfons Staerk

This book synthesizes the learnings from over 30 years of martial arts, leadership, and coaching practice. While it focuses on Tai Chi, many of its lessons transcend into daily life, providing a down-to-earth and practical guide on how to practice Tai Chi, regardless of the specific style.

The principles outlined here reflect what we’ve learned from our teacher, Hilmar, as well as insights from other martial arts leaders and questions posed by our students. We’ve also had our own realizations along the way.

We hope you enjoy the book and discover ideas that resonate with you, enriching your own practice. While we cannot claim to teach universal truths, our aim is to inspire your personal explorations.

“To find and to understand the principles means to find the heart.

In Western cultures, we often look at martial arts more as a form of acrobatics. Few people look at what is behind the outer shell. To find and to understand the principles (the essence) means to find the heart.

Furthermore, those principles are the basis for a life of morality, humanity, justice, acceptance, and wisdom. This book offers those principles as a foundation for the student who embarks on the journey to discover the art on a deeper layer. Understanding the essence will provide a solid foundation to further develop the technical movements of the art of Tai Chi.

Alfons and Uli have found their path and shared their personal emotions, sensations, and thoughts in this well-written book.”

Suspended Between Heaven and Earth

Suspended Between Heaven and Earth: Principles of Tai Chi

By Uli & Alfons Staerk

Where Finding the Heart offered the first sketch of what we’d learned from thirty years on the mat, this book goes deeper into the mechanics behind it. Suspended Between Heaven and Earth is our attempt to explain, plainly and in full, why Tai Chi actually works — not as mysticism, and not as vague metaphor, but as a coherent architecture of rooting, structure, breath, and intent that holds up under real scrutiny.

The book moves chapter by chapter through the body’s foundation, its inner architecture, and the mind that directs it all: how the feet root, how weight shifts between empty and full, how the spine holds a central axis, where the Kua and the Dantien fit into the whole system, how spiral force actually generates power, and how the mind — through Xin and Yi — comes to lead the body rather than follow it. Along the way we draw on the classical Tai Chi literature, on our own teacher Hilmar Fuchs’s lifetime of instruction, and on three decades of watching these principles work — and sometimes fail to work — in our own classroom.

This is a book for students who already sense there is more underneath the form than they’ve been shown, and who are ready to look closely at what that “more” actually consists of.

“Once again, Alfons and Uli have generously shared their deep knowledge of the principles and essence of Tai Chi Ch’uan.

Suspended Between Heaven and Earth captures the nature of Tai Chi Ch’uan with remarkable clarity, offering the keys to a profound haven through the opportunity to engage in a deep and ongoing conversation with our body and mind.

This book offers us a path back to ourselves, asking us to slow down to see more clearly as the teachings of the past become clearer and more accessible.”

Tai Chi Apparel

Inspired by Practice. Designed for Our Community.

Tai Chi is more than something we do during class — it is a way of moving through life with greater awareness, balance, and intention. Over years of practice and teaching, we’ve come to appreciate that these principles stay with us long after we leave the training floor. They shape how we stand, how we breathe, and how we meet the world around us.

Our apparel was created as an expression of that journey. Designed specifically for Tai Chi practitioners, each piece reflects the timeless values of our art: rootedness, relaxation, harmony, and lifelong learning. Whether you’re practicing in the park, teaching a class, or simply enjoying your day, these designs offer a quiet reminder of the principles we cultivate together.

Every design is inspired by the Bozeman Tai Chi community and our shared commitment to mindful movement. More than clothing, we hope these shirts and hoodies become companions on your own path — a way to carry the spirit of Tai Chi with you wherever life takes you.

Original Hand-Painted Watercolor Art Made with Care

Uli is a lifelong creative who finds joy in quiet moments, natural beauty, and the simple act of making something by hand. For years, her art lived quietly in the background — sketchbooks tucked away, paintings shared with friends, small moments of beauty made simply for the joy of creating. Painting has always been a place of calm, presence, and reflection, inspired by flowers, light, and the gentle rhythms of nature.

Her hand-painted watercolors, including her unique card sets, are created slowly and with care, each piece original and one-of-a-kind. No two are ever the same, as each reflects the moment it was made. Sharing her art is a meaningful step, inviting others to experience something handmade, thoughtful, and human — a quiet connection in a fast-moving world.
